I am hosting with ILance and want to know if transactions on ILance (mysite.com) are protected by powerful Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption technology (128 bit encryption), in standard use by major other ecommerce web sites. If you, does the SSL encrypt your credit card number, name, address, and phone number before they are sent over the Internet?

Trying to assess the security of the software. Also, as a hosting agent, you will have access to all this information. What about your security?

Should SquareTrade Mediation be used? What about other SquareTrade options like SquareTrade SealProgram? Should US Search be used to verify the VERIFIABLE information about service providers? I want to minimize and limit my liability in all of these areas.

What do you suggest or recommend?

Thanks,
Bill

SSL is something that you need to take care of from a third party company who can provide your SSL key. This SSL key is actually purchased not by ILance, but you must go to the source.

The ILance server uses Plesk, which means Plesk does in fact support SSL keys when setup correctly. I believe a few ILance hosting customers have enabled SSL on their domains so this is a possibility but it's not a standard "feature" we provide like we would for PHP or MySQL. SSL take a little knowledge to understand how the process works and how it can be installed on your server.

But yes, ILance will handle SSL by using the HTTPS_SERVER variable within your config file. At the moment, since you don't have ssl it HTTP_SERVER and HTTPS_SERVER would both be set to the non-ssl version of your site. When you have finally installed SSL to your domain, your final step would be to change the HTTPS_SERVER config setting in your config file to enable SSL over your marketplace.

Peter

Can anyone out there suggest an SSL certificate provider? Verisign, Geotrust?

I know that I will need to set up this type of security for my marketplace, but do not have any experience in encrytion services.
Thanks
