So, it finally happend to me since my original XP installation. I had some virus lurking around in my PC. I'm not sure of the extent of it, but it got to the point where I was unable to reboot the PC into windows.
I was able to do a Windows Restore from a few months back, and all is well. These days, viruses are undetected by major anti-virus apps, as I had tried about 3 various apps (McAfee, Norton and AVG Free Edition).
I also ran SpyBot - Search and Destroy along with Adware (latest updates) and still, nothing. This time, Adware had reported to me my MBR records were unreadable, but continued with the scan.
To make a long story short, NOTHING worked. So, I had the option of re-formatting to spend 5 hours on a reinstall, or use Microsoft Restore. I did the restore option from a few months back (restore point) and all is back to normal.
Not only that, but things are much quicker.
PS - The virus was first discovered when a CTRL-ALT-DELETE in windows task manager shows for a quick second, and then just disapears completely. That was fishy.
